The role-holder assist the cardiologist in diagnostic cardiac catheterizations and interventional procedures on patients and providing quality nursing care, assessing and managing patient care in the cardiac catheterization lab, and supporting interventional radiology as needed in line with hospital policies and prevailing regulations.

Key Responsibilities/ Duties / Tasks

  • To understand the procedural component of interventional cardiology including setting up of cath lab for intervention, assistance to the performing physician, handling and passage of blood gases, interpretation of blood gas results and angiography as within the scope of training and maintenance of sterile field.
  • Knowledge of operation of interventional software for the obtaining and recording of hemodynamic data from the case.
  • Intimate knowledge of the supplies in the lab including sheaths, stents, catheters, balloons and the many other components the interventionalist may request for during the procedure.
  • Willingness for pre-intervention planning with the respective interventional cardiologist to have the appropriate supplies prepared in a timely fashion prior to the intervention.
  • Perform pre-intervention and post-intervention assessment, including measuring blood pressure and temperature, checking blood glucose levels, and administering medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Assess, utilizing age-specific data, the patient’s physical, psychosocial, and spiritual status in a comprehensive manner.
  • Perform initial assessment and complete required documentation within Tenwek Hospital organizational standards.
  • Perform and document ongoing assessments, including observation, physical examination, laboratory/test results, and patient response to procedural intervention.
  • Maintain equipment used in the cath lab in conjunction with the biomedical department.
  • Participate in the identification and clarification of patient needs as evidenced by participation in multidisciplinary care, planning to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Review and revise plan of care according to change in patient’s status.
  • Incorporate patient teaching/discharge planning to promote optimal outcome.
  • Coordinate and document appropriate discharge planning and referral to ensure continuity of care after discharge.

OTHER GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Organize and coordinate nursing care and medical treatments.
  • Provide and ensure appropriate health teaching and counselling to individuals, families, and community.
  • Maintain the unit effectively according to hospital policy with minimum supervision.
  • Promote effective interpersonal and public relations.
  • Maintain infection prevention guidelines and practice.
  • Ensure safety in the work-place by maintaining a clean, safe, and pleasant environment.
  • Maintain familiarity with the legal implications of nursing practice and ensure that legal requirements are met.
  • Identify research topics, construct a research plan, and carry out surveys at the operational level.
  • Be punctual and available when on duty.
  • Display Christ-like attitude and character both on- and off- duty.
  • Abide by the Tenwek Hospital moral code and Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) regulations.
  • Perform other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by Unit’s Nursing Officer In-charge or his/her designate.

Academic qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Nursing or related field from a recognized institution…..
  • Professional Qualifications (Special training or Professional certification).
  • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced cardiac life support, advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS)
