The GEDSI (Gender equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion) Coordinator will take the lead in implementing the project’s gender mainstreaming plan, ensuring the project meets standard GEDSI thresholds, while being an integral link to the indigenous peoples and local communities with whom the project works closely with.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collaborating with the Monitoring & Evaluation Officer on monitoring and reporting on Climate ARK activities. This may include engaging with consortium partners and facilitating sessions on GEDSI.
• Identifying GEDSI-related partnerships/relationships working in the REDD+, GEDSI, and justice spaces, particularly those engaging in promoting women's leadership and visibility. This will include sharing lessons learned across different contexts and identifying areas for collaboration. A feature of this task may include identifying service providers who are able to deliver GEDSI-related training to the ClimateARK consortium or beyond.
• Prepare comprehensive reports on GEDSI activities, outcomes, and best practices, contributing to project reporting, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement efforts.
• As required, contributing, and/or reviewing Cis and/or ClimateARKs gender mainstreaming plan, Indigenous Peoples’ Participation Plan; quarterly reports; program-produced learning and communications materials; program deliverables and program policies and procedures, ensuring that all these documents adequately identify, incorporate, and/or promote GEDSI messaging and/or activities.
• Engaging with CI staff, including operations staff and management, to ensure that Conservation International induction/orientation/training processes for staff incorporate sessions on GEDSI, reflecting the Kenyan context. In addition, as required, work with CI operations staff to, review, modify, design, and/or support the implementation of processes, practices, and tools to help guide more gender-equitable and disability-cognizant human resource policies and practices
• Support program teams in the development and delivery of training and capacity building on key gender topics to beneficiaries.
• Work closely with the M&E team to ensure sex and age-disaggregated data is collected, and that gender analysis is applied and used to adaptively manage program implementation including IEC material that would communicate GEDSI effectively and ensure their accessibility through consistent promotion of their usage within the organization and project team.
• Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation of GEDSI outcomes to assess progress and impact and recommend adjustments as needed.
• Provide the link between the Climate ARK project and the Ips and LCs in the project, specifically in relation to REDD+ and nature-based solutions implementations.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance of OMCP with the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standard.
• Responsible for managing the collection of data aligned with the VCS, this includes overseeing field teams that collect soil organic carbon data and other ecological parameters such as herd structure, herbaceous, and woody biomass required to undertake emissions reduction calculations according to appropriate VCS carbon standard methodologies.
• Track the level of implementation of project activities that are critical to rangeland restoration and carbon sequestration e.g. adherence to livestock grazing management plans and stocking densities, ensure timeous reporting of non-compliance
• Responsible for safe storage and delivery of all Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) and other biological samples to project-approved laboratories and ensuring timely delivery of analysis
• Responsible for managing the collection of data on livestock movement, livestock numbers, and herd structures in accordance with appropriate carbon standard methodologies to show evidence of project activities and calculate project emissions and leakage.
• Participate in and support collection of baseline data and support quantification of project baseline; this will include information on past and current grazing and other land use practices and gathering data on broader land use practices in the landscape that contribute to degradation.

• Responsible for safe and appropriate data storage and managing data sharing with project participants and partners in the landscape.

Qualifications
Required

POSITION SUMMARY

• The Project Manager will leverage CI’s work in the Northern and Southern Landscapes through the GCF-funded Towards Ending Drought Emergencies (TWENDE) project and the investment in the landscape including, the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), and partners in both northern and southern Kenya. The Project Manager will oversee the implementation and coordination of gender-related initiatives across the landscape. Specifically, the Project Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Empowering Women to Lead Rangelands Conservation interventions, ensuring its successful planning, execution, and completion within specified timelines and budget. This role requires strong project management skills, leadership capabilities, and the ability to collaborate with stakeholders to achieve project objectives.

• The Chief Field Officer, Africa Field Division (CFO Africa), leads Conservation International’s strategy, delivery, and impact in Africa, with a focus on four primary elements: Conservation Outcomes, Operational Excellence, Reimagining Conservation, and Fundraising. They lead a team of 290+ staff with an annual budget of $40 million.
• The CFO Africa develops and oversees a Pan African strategy by identifying priorities, raising and allocating flexible funding resources, and representing CI to internal and external partners, including high-level decision-makers both internally within CI, and externally with donor agencies, governments, and private sector leaders.

• The African Pastoralism Technical Specialist provides technical leadership, oversight, and support through advisory and active testing of ideas on site-based grasslands and savannah projects within Conservation International’s Africa Field Division, with a specific focus on Herding for Health (H4H) implementation. The technical specialist will ensure grasslands and savannah are adhering to the best sustainable livestock regenerative agriculture and land management practices and will directly coordinate with site-based technical staff to provide guidance and support as needed, for example in grazing area management and farmer engagements. They will operationalize fit-for-purpose sustainable livestock management approaches across all H4H sites, considering the different ecosystem types, cultural diversity, environmental variabilities, and animal health challenges that are prevalent in the different landscapes. They will update technical learning materials based on research and experience from demonstration sites and provide input to training partners for the development and implementation of relevant training materials.
• In addition to providing site-specific technical input, the African Pastoralism Technical Specialist will form part of the CI Grasslands and Savannah Team, and will provide input to strategic planning, and fundraising proposals. They will work closely with other technical divisions in Conservation International and Peace Parks Foundation, responsible for restoration, technology development, Conservation Stewardship Agreements, and mapping.
• The Technical Specialist will work closely with the Conservation Stewardship Program and site-based teams to engage and implement Stewardship Agreements.

Responsibilities
Strategy Implementation

• Livestock Production
• Provide technical leadership in sustainable livestock management techniques including animal health, productivity, and nutrition for communal livestock farming.
• Provide technical support to herding for health implementation with a focus on animal productivity, animal handling, branding, herd dynamics, herd health, and record keeping.
• Develop fit-for-purpose community livestock management approaches that support healthier animals and healthier grasslands.
• Assess herd genetics and engage farmers on suitable approaches to improve herd genetics in each of the Herding for Health cohorts.

• Where necessary, support the implementation of commodity-based trade in line with the World Organization for Animal Health.
• Provide technical input in implementing a One Health Approach in H4H sites.
• Together with policy development teams, contribute to policy briefs on enhancing livestock trade and commodity-based trade in Africa.
• Grasslands, Savannah, and Scrublands Management
• Implement climate-smart grazing plans to ensure sustainable healthy grasslands and in-line with the needs of the landscape.
• Conduct farmer engagements together with site teams to co-create grazing plans (rotational grazing and planned rest, considering frequency, timing, duration, and intensity to support restoration of degraded grasslands
• Together with the site teams, relevant government departments, support the operationalization of grazing plans at the landscape level to maximize the ecological impact from the intervention.
• Ensure livestock production measures implemented align with ecological imperatives to restore biodiversity and sustain ecosystem functions.
• Contribute to policy briefs on sustainable livestock management as a mechanism for climate adaptation and mitigation.
• Support the Grasslands and Savannah Senior Program Manager in leading a technical community of practice focused on grasslands and savannah at the landscape level.
• Community Engagements and Governance
• Engage livestock farmers/pastoralists to better manage their livestock herds for better productivity along the livestock value chain.
• Develop strategies for improved community governance that empower farmers to build sustainable grazing management, enhance livestock health, and obtain better markets,
• Provide technical leadership in ensuring quality implementation of the herding for health amplification strategy at landscape implementation/site level and help consolidate existing projects, establish new project sites, and support the development of strong sustainability mechanisms in each site.
• Work together with the Stewardship Agreement and Site Teams, to support farmer engagements on Rangeland Stewardship Agreements.

Capacity Building

• Support landscape leads and where needed provide leadership in the establishment of the technical advisory committee in each landscape to tap into local experience and expertise that will help improve the delivery of outcomes of the project in each implementation site.
• Provide technical input on training manuals, toolkits, online courses, and other learning-related materials.
• Work closely with training partners (e.g. Southern Africa Wildlife College, Herding Academy, Afrivet and ILRI, and other relevant training institutes in East and Southern Africa) to develop relevant H4H training material.
• Support and when needed conduct H4H training to identified groups and stakeholders in support of implementation of CI and partner projects.
• Capacitate and strengthen farmers to be better stewards of their land with robust governance systems.

Financial Sustainability

• Together with partners, establish market access opportunities and support farmer engagements in implementing prioritized opportunities.
• Develop and support the effective implementation of technical proposals and action plans related to livestock work, to deliver planned outcomes.
• Provide technical contributions to innovative finance initiatives such as Soil Organic Carbon, and Payment for Ecosystem Services, among others.

Compliance, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning

• Support with data collection for the H4H Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning framework covering indicators such as land cover changes, livestock, and livelihood/socio-economic impacts.
• Ensure each site is compliant with relevant organizational policies, protocols, and frameworks.

Overall Responsibilities

• The African Grasslands and Pastoralists Senior Manager is responsible for managing and supporting a range of technical and strategic duties and partnerships. This includes working closely with the Regional Grasslands and Savannah Senior Director and with local, regional, and global technical staff to deliver high-quality strategic and technical support. They monitor progress and provide periodic technical reports on progress against goals. The Senior Manager will significantly contribute to the oversight of external partnerships and support in building partner capacity on demand across the African region.
• As directed, the Senior Manager supports fundraising efforts including developing funding proposals and budgets and supporting senior staff in pursuing funding opportunities.
• This position supervises the Science Communication and Knowledge Management Manager, the Regional Grasslands and Savannah Impact Manager and the H4H Restoration Manager, and the African Pastoralism Technical Specialist.

• Together with technical support teams, identify and prioritize activities needed to successfully achieve conservation and human development outcomes in grasslands, savannah, and other dryland ecosystems.
• Lead CI teams in implementing the Herding for Health amplification strategy by working closely with PPF partner and CI’s Regional Project Managers and landscape leads and supporting external partners .
• Provide technical leadership in rangeland ecology, climate adaptation, and mitigation strategies for deployment in Herding for Health sites and in line with the needs of the landscape.
• Provide strategic and technical leadership in sustainable livestock management techniques including animal health, productivity, and nutrition for communal livestock farming.
• Provide support to Herding for Health team in landscapes to ensure enhanced engagement of farmers/farmer groups and support landscape teams to establish community governance structures.
• Provide strategic leadership to H4H teams and through working closely with enterprise partners. Act as a bridge between enterprises, and H4H implementation to ensure H4H implementation follows necessary standards for relevant markets.
• Work with enterprise partners to help unlock relevant livestock value chains and provide access to markets for pastoralists and implement a market-based incentive approach for sustained implementation of the H4H model in the landscape.

CI's H4H Portfolio Management and Reporting

• Ensure all CI projects implementing the H4H model are aligned and delivering against objectives and intended outcomes in a consistent manner.
• Develop annual work plans with H4H Implementation managers.
• Ensure compliance with CI policies and frameworks across all implementation sites
• Provide input in policy briefs developed from the evidence generated during implementation.
• Where relevant, manage H4H budgets and costs in line with donor requirements and keep track of H4H budgets being implemented by other leads within CI.
• Working with relevant project managers, provide periodic reports and assessments on progress against goals for internal and external audiences on the overall success of the H4H portfolio. Assess progress and refine action plans and outcomes as needed.
• Supervise H4H technical team(s) including partner staff and contractors and ensure alignment with the H4H Toolkit
• Collaborate with H4H Partners in Peace Parks Foundation and other organizations to implement and deliver commitments for the Herding for Health (H4H) program.
• Co-lead the development of the H4H implementation framework together with PPF.
• Co-lead in designing and implementing the Africa Rangeland Watch as part of regional monitoring of restoration activities across Africa.
• Co-develop H4H feasibility studies as needed.
• Support the development of Rangeland Stewardship Agreements together with H4H teams.
• Oversee H4H reporting.
• Develop capacity-building plans to support the implementation of H4H model and engage relevant training partners and institutions to conduct training.

Risk Management and Impact Monitoring

• Support the design and review of H4H MEL framework.
• Provide leadership needed for the implementation of the H4H MEL framework consistently across all CI sites.
• Ensure the implementation of Environmental and Social Safeguards in H4H projects across all CI sites.
• Record and manage risks across all CI sites and document and share lessons for adaptive management across all H4H sites.
• Coordinate and manage H4H knowledge exchange events and participate in regional and international conferences

Stakeholder Relationship Management

• Support the Africa Grassland Director in leading a technical community of practice focused on grasslands and savannah in Africa.
• Cultivate new partnerships and manage existing ones in all CI H4H sites, and when needed, provide technical support to partners to ensure they achieve their intended H4H targets.
• Create and manage partnerships with relevant research institutions to support H4H sites with applied research activities.
• Serve as a recognized technical resource and share technical best practices within and outside CI.

Research, Knowledge Management and Science Communication

• Oversee the search, knowledge management, and science communication activities for the Africa Grasslands Program to ensure the successful delivery.
• Guide the t preparation of appropriate internal and external communication materials including case studies, fact sheets, and lessons learned from project sites.
• Ensure research carried out in H4H sites is helpful, respectful, applied, and relevant to implementation with local community needs taking priority.
• Archive and organize CI H4H program materials in SharePoint.
• Oversee the H4H Impact portfolio and support partners to have an updated monitoring system.
• Support in organizing high-level meetings including steering committee meetings, stakeholders’ meetings, training and partner meetings.

Financial Sustainability and Resource Mobilization/Fundraising

• Support the development and implementation of an H4H investment strategy including innovative conservation financing and unlocking soil organic carbon revenue opportunities for CI sites.
• Support fundraising for the Africa Grasslands and Savannah Program portfolio.
• Support the creation and growth of a funding pipeline for the Africa Grasslands and Savannah Program portfolio.

People Management

• Supervise the Science Communication and Knowledge Management Manager, the Regional Grasslands and Savannah Impact Manager, and the African Pastoralism Technical Specialist
• Where necessary, supervise Division and Country Level Technical staff.
• Foster a culture of building a team for collaboration and teamwork and motivate and support team members as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Qualifications
Required

• Bachelor's in grasslands ecology, climate, and related sciences, grasslands and savannah production ecology, natural resource economics, livestock production, veterinary sciences, or wildlife management.
• 5 to 7 years of work experience in sustainable livestock management, community development with Pastoralists or landscape/grassland management involving pastoralists. At least 3 years working with communal livestock farmers and pastoralists on livestock management, with a proven track record of providing relevant market access opportunities and strategy development experience.
• Up to 2 years of experience supervising implementation teams.
• Someone who has a passion for African Pastoralism and the great potential pastoralism presents as a nature-based grasslands restoration solution.
• Proven ability to understand, interpret, and apply technical and scientific information and data to achieve tangible results.
• Excellent working knowledge of carbon projects.
• Proven ability to work in a team environment and work well across cultures and within and across organizations.
• Fluency in English is required.

• The position is critical to the success of the CI Kenya program. CI is therefore looking for a strategic, delivery-focused, down-to-earth, action-oriented conservation leader, who will help shape CI's vision, and deliver CI goals in the landscape through program and partnerships growth and seamless execution of existing activities. They will be the primary, day-to-day lead person for all CI work in this landscape. The position’s primary focus is the coordination and consolidation of current CI work, growing partner relationships while overseeing program expansion in the larger landscape.

Key area of focus

• Consolidation of current projects into programs and integration of thematic work – e.g. grasslands, forests, freshwater, policy, conservation finance (including carbon project development) as envisaged in the Africa Field Division strategy.
• Ensure diversity, equity, inclusion, and social safeguards considerations are built into program design and delivery.
• Consolidate and grow existing partnerships that are key to delivery, fundraising, and communication to ensure CI visibility is enhanced.
• Ensure that transboundary aspects of the landscape to support CI growth plans within the landscape, mitigate risks, and take advantage of existing and new opportunities.

Responsibilities
Landscape Strategy Development and Implementation

• Lead the development of a southern Kenya grasslands strategy and theory of change, building on existing Chyulu (sub-landscape) and other CI strategies for input.
• Consolidate current projects into a program with clear outcomes for which each project is delivering for the landscape in line with the landscape’s theory of change.

Policy engagement

• Support CI Kenya policy work related to landscape restoration, carbon, and restoration value chain.
• Lead engagement with relevant County governments in Kenya to influence local policies in favor of CI’s vision and goals for the landscape.

Partnerships, fundraising, and communication

• Build clear partnership strategies and outcomes and support the delivery of these outcomes.
• Lead the CI partnership engagement within the landscape to ensure implementation delivery, fundraising, and communication targets are met while enhancing CI visibility.
• Support fundraising and communication efforts by CI Kenya directed at the landscape and the larger CI Kenya portfolio.
• Develop new funding concepts/proposals focused which speak to the landscape’s theory of change and draw on various areas of CI expertise – such as nature-positive enterprises, impact investing, and carbon project development.
• Ensure familiarization with donor agreements and donor requirements as well as CI's donor-related policies and procedures to ensure that projects under the portfolio adhere to all donor and CI policies and requirements.
• Develop and sustain partnerships with the various County Governments (e.g. County governments of Kajiado and Narok) and subnational government entities in the landscape.

People and resource management responsibilities

• Accountable for management of project and landscape staff ensuring integrity of our work with partners, staff, and partner performance management and support.
• Accountable for an operating budget that tracks and monitors expenditures. Initiates check requests or similar routine transactions within established guidelines.
• Activities support management of CI project funds from public or private donor sources to ensure resources are applied as designed and accountability systems are adhered to.
• Responsible for safety and proper use of the facilities and equipment assigned to facilitate field activities.

Maintain Implementation excellence of Projects

• Overall accountability for the local delivery of all CI Projects in the landscape and Oversight of landscape partner implementation activities.
• Coordinated Implementation of all active projects with optimal people and resource efficiency.
• Build strong relationships with the partners and stakeholders within the landscape.
• Liaising/co-ordination with CI Africa Field Division project lead; and stakeholders. Set up and manage a periodic governance structure to facilitate feedback and issue/risk identification and resolution related to projects.
• Leverage CI subject matter expertise and act as CI ambassador for the project and the liaison between community members and other project partners.
• Play a significant role in the design and implementation of activities encompassing enterprise development grants and facilitating technical assistance to community and local enterprises.
• Play a central role in compiling field-based project reports and communication materials.
• Ensure continuous delivery, risk assessment, and mitigation measures are put in place.
• Assist with the arrangement of site visits to the field, including arrangement of logistics, communication, guide, translation, etc.
• Lead the communication of CI activities within the landscape to a range of audiences.
• Liaising and coordinating with CI’s Operations and Finance teams providing implementation support to various projects.
• Oversee our service provider contract management in the field implementation of their TWENDE project activities to ensure quality, timely, and efficiency in delivery in line with contractual agreements.
• Currently, our active projects in the landscape include The Chyulus Hills Restoration Projects, The GCF (Green Climate Fund) TWENDE project, and the One Mara Carbon Project (OMCP).

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Nairobi-based with frequent travel to Chyulu-Amboseli, Kajiado-Ilbissil-Namanga, Magadi-Mosiro-Loita, and Masai Mara sub-landscapes.
• Hybrid working requirements - partly in a typical office environment and partly in field conditions.
• Flexibility to work outside normal work hours to meet deadlines as needed.
• This is a position only eligible to persons who have the right to work in Kenya without CI sponsorship.

Qualifications

• Experience in overseeing the development and implementation of restoration and climate resilience interventions.
• Demonstrable knowledge of and experience in overseeing carbon and REDD+ project design and implementation.

• Deep knowledge of the Southern Kenya Landscape and partners working in the area.
• Proven track record in pastoral and agro-pastoral community engagement.

• A strong people leader and prudent financial manager.

• The Finance and Grants Coordinator is responsible for performing a range of grants and contracts management, accounting, procurement, and financial-related duties under the direction of a Finance and Grants Manager or other senior Finance staff. Working within a department, division, or program, they play a key role in administering financial transactions in compliance with CI’s financial and donor reporting policies and requirements. Duties include reviewing and processing financial transactions which may include invoices, journal entries, petty cash, travel advances, payroll, etc. They also prepare journal entries, post transactions in the financial system, reconcile GL accounts, and prepare financial reports. The Finance and Grants Coordinator maintains financial records and archives and assists with related operations and administrative duties as assigned.
• The Finance and Grants Coordinator assists in responding to staff queries, trains new employees, and otherwise provides support for the efficient handling of financial transactions. They acts as a liaison with the program and HQ finance staff to ensure financial best practices are in place and followed. This position does not manage staff. Duties are performed under general direction and subject to general review.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review external grantee financial reports and follow up for closure of the reviews in a timely manner.
• Maintains communication with the external grantees and provides timely responses to any queries or requests.
• Monitor and manage contracts i.e. review and process contract invoices in the system, ensure adequate support documentation for consultant reimbursable expenses.
• Review transactions for completeness, accuracy, and proper documentation and approvals prior to processing for compliance with donor regulations and CI Policies.
• Assist management in responding to internal/external audit questions and requests for information.
• Perform month-end and year-end procedures including, but not limited to preparing all month-end reconciliations and year-end working papers as per CI- guidelines.
• Support administrative processes and planning of all scheduled training and field visits.
• Support in the procurement of goods and services in line with CI Policies, donor rules, and regulations.
